Sustainable, decarbonised co-extraction of vanadium and titanium minerals from Europe's low-grade vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite deposits - AVANTIS

Fieldwork Underway at Otanmäki Mine for Horizon Europe AVANTIS Project

Exciting progress is underway at the Otanmäki Mine in Finland, where fieldwork has officially begun as part of the AVANTIS Project, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe programme.

Over the past ten days, the project team has successfully completed preparatory work for a series of small-scale test blasts—a key milestone led by Work Package 2 (WP2). The blasting operations involved excavating a trench where controlled test blasts will be carried out in the coming days.

The focus of this phase is to evaluate innovative selective blasting technologies that can enhance ore fragmentation, improve mineral composition analysis, and optimise downstream processes. These efforts aim to support the responsible extraction of critical raw materials such as vanadium and titanium.

This achievement is the result of strong collaboration between the following project partners:

🔍 What’s next?
In the upcoming days, the team will carry out the test blasts and gather data to refine and scale up the most promising approaches for sustainable resource extraction.

📢 Stay tuned for further updates as AVANTIS continues to push the boundaries of responsible and efficient mining technology.
